Meeting No. 61

Thursday, April 25, 2002

The Standing Committee on Transport and Government Operations met at 11:07 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Ovid Jackson, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: John Cannis, Bev Desjarlais, André Harvey, Ovid Jackson, Marcel Proulx, Alex Shepherd, Paul Szabo.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: John Christopher, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Construction Association: Jim Facette, Director, Road builder and heavy construction; Barry Brown, Chair of the Board. From the Canadian Auto Workers Union: Dave Tilley, National Representative; Len Poirier, President CAW Local 4268 and President CAW Road Transportation Council; Nigel Cave, Unit Chairperson Local 4268. From the As Individual: Peter Turner, Former truck driver.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its consideration of Truckers Hours of Service, safety concerns and transborder/border crossing issues, and their impact on the Canadian trucking industry.

Barry Brown, Dave Tilley and Peter Turner made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 12:40 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
