MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 38

Wednesday, November 28, 2001

The Standing Committee on Transport and Government Operations met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 362 East Block, the Chair, Ovid Jackson presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Reg Alcock, André Harvey, Ovid Jackson, Mario Laframboise, Val Meredith, James Moore, Alex Shepherd, Paul Szabo.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: John Christopher; June Dewetering, Researchers.

Witnesses: From the United Steelworkers of America: Lawrence McBrearty, Canadian National Director; Robert Falconer, Department Head, Education. From Aéroports de Montréal: Jim Cherry, President; Pierre-Paul Pharand, Director Airport Security. From the Canadian Union of Public Employees: Rob Limongelli, Division Secretary Treasurer; Richard Balnis, Researcher Officer.

In accordance with Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of its study on the current state of airline safety and security in Canada.

 

Jim Cherry, Lawrence McBrearty and Richard Balnis each made opening statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 5:09 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

 

At 6:20 p.m. the sitting was resumed in camera.

 

It was agreed: - That the Committee begin consideration of S-33, An Act to amend the Carriage by Air Act on Thursday November 29, 2001.

 

The Committee proceeded to consider its draft report on airline safety and security in Canada.

 

At 7:01 p.m. Reg Alcock took the Chair.

 

At 7:05 p.m. Ovid Jackson took the Chair.

At 8:05 p.m. the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
