MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 22

Monday, October 1st, 2001

The Standing Committee on Transport and Government Operations met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 371 West Block, for the purpose of electing a Chair and Vice-Chairs.

Member(s) of the Committee present: Reg Alcock, Gerry Byrne, Joe Comuzzi, Bev Desjarlais, Brian Fitzpatrick, Peter Goldring, André Harvey, Ovid Jackson, Mario Laframboise, Val Meredith, James Moore, Marcel Proulx, Alex Shepherd.

Acting Members present : Dennis Mills for John Cannis; Guy St-Julien for Paul Szabo

Other Member present: Jacques Saada

In attendance: From the Research branch of the Library of Parliament: John Christopher

Pursuant to Standing Order 106(1) and (2), election of a Chair and Vice-Chairs.

 

The Clerk of the Committee presided over the election of the Chair.

 

On motion of Peter Goldring, it was unanimously agreed, -That Ovid Jackson be elected Chair of the Committee.

 

Accordingly, Ovid Jackson took the chair.

 

On motion of Guy St-Julien, it was agreed, on division, -That Marcel Proulx be elected Vice-Chair of the Committee.

 

On motion of Peter Goldring, it was agreed, -That James Moore be elected Vice-Chair of the Committee.

 

In accordance with the notice of motion requirements adopted by the Committee at its meeting of Wednesday, February 21, 2001, Brian Fitzpatrick moved the following motion:

 

With respect with the tragic events of September 11, 2001 in New York City and the Pentagon:

 

MOVED that, pursuant to Standing Order 108, the Transport Committee request the Minister of Transport and President of Air Canada to appear before this Committee at the earliest possible opportunity.

 

Debate arose thereon.

 

Reg Alcock moved the following amendment, -That the motion be amended by removal the words “and President of Air Canada”.

 

Debate continued.

 

The question was put on the amendment and it was agreed to.

 

The Committee resumed consideration of the main motion as amended, -With respect with the tragic events of September 11, 2001 in New York City and the Pentagon: - MOVED that, pursuant to Standing Order 108, the Transport Committee request the Minister of Transport to appear before this Committee at the earliest possible opportunity.

 

The debate continued.

 

The question was put on the main motion as amended and it was agreed to.

 

Reg Alcock moved that the Committee meet on Tuesday, October 2, 2001 to discuss future business.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to.

At 3:58 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
