Meeting No. 13

Thursday, May 3, 2001

The Standing Committee on Transport and Government Operations met at 11:10 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Ovid Jackson, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Bev Desjarlais, Norman Doyle, Jay Hill, Ovid Jackson, Dominic LeBlanc, Serge Marcil, Marcel Proulx, Alex Shepherd, Brent St. Denis and Paul Szabo.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: John Christopher and June Dewetering, Researchers.

Witnesses: From the Department of Transport: Brian Orrbine, Senior Policy Advisor, Road Safety Programs; Malcom McHattie, A/Director, Road Safety Programs.

In accordance with Standing Order 108(2), briefing session by the Department of Transport.

At 11:11 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 11:13 a.m., the sitting resumed.

At 11:14 a.m., Brian Orrbine made an opening statement and, answered questions.

At 11: 38 a.m., John Christopher made a statement at the request of the Chair.

At 12:55 p.m., Bev Desjarlais moved, -- That, in order to "add to our body of knowledge and allow broader public input," as suggested by the Minister of Transportation, the Committee conduct open hearings across the country to consult directly with Canadians about commercial vehicle drivers' hours of service.

And debate thereon, the question being put on the motion it was defeated by a show of hands.
