Meeting No. 5

Tuesday, May 28, 2002

The Sub-Committee on the Study of Sport in Canada of the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 208, West Block, the Chair, Dennis Mills, presiding.

Members of the Sub-Committee present: Rodger Cuzner, Robert Lanctôt, Dennis Mills, Dick Proctor, Hélène Scherrer.

Acting Members present: Stan Keyes for Serge Marcil, Jim Abbot for Chuck Strahl.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Antony Jackson, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From Sport Matters: John Bales, Member; Dina Bell-Laroche, Member; Victor Lachance, Spokesperson. From Athletes CAN: Thomas Jones, Executive Director; Ian Bird, Member. From ADR-sport-RED: Gordon Peterson, President; Benoit Girardin, Interim Director. From Sports-Québec: Raymond Côté, President.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Wednesday, April 17, 2002, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-54, An Act to promote physical activity and sport (See Minutes of Proceedings, Wednesday, May 22, 2002, Meeting No. 4).

John Bales, Dina Bell-Laroche and Victor Lachance made statements and answered questions.

Thomas Jones and Ian Bird made statements and answered questions.

Gordon Peterson and Benoit Girardin made statements and answered questions.

At 5:20 p.m., the meeting was suspended.

At 6:08 p.m., the meeting resumed.

Raymond Côté made a statement and answered questions.

On the motion of Robert Lanctôt, it was agreed, - That the Sub-Committee hear four or five more witnesses before proceeding to consider the Bill clause by clause.

At 6:43 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
