Tuesday, April 16, 2002
The Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs met in a televised session at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, David Pratt, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Claude Bachand, Colleen Beaumier, Leon Benoit, Stan Dromisky, Cheryl Gallant, John O'Reilly, Janko Perić, David Pratt, Carmen Provenzano, Elsie Wayne, Bob Wood.
Acting Member present: Bev Desjarlais for Peter Stoffer
Appearing: The Honourable Art Eggleton, Minister of National Defence.
Witnesses: From the Department of National Defence: Lieutenant-General George Macdonald, Vice-Chief of the Defence Staff; R.M. (Bob) Emond, Assitant Deputy Minister, Finance and Corporate Services; Alan Williams, Assistant Deputy Minister, Materiel.
The Committee considered a travel budget for the Sub-Committee on Veterans Affairs.
Stan Dromisky moved, seconded by Elsie Wayne, --That, in relation to its study on Long-Term Care for Veterans, the Sub-Committee on Veterans Affairs be authorized to travel to Western Canada from May 26 to 31, 2002 for a fact finding mission, with the necessary staff, and that the proposed travel budget in the amount of $82, 296 be adopted.
The question being put on the motion, it was agreed to.
Pursuant to an Order of Reference of the House dated Tuesday, February 28, 2002, the Committee proceeded to the consideration of the Estimates 2002-2003—Votes 1, 5, 10, 15 and 20 under National Defence.
The Minister made an opening statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.
At 5:30 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
