MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 48

Tuesday, March 19, 2002

The Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs met in a televised session at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, David Pratt, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Rob Anders, Claude Bachand, Colleen Beaumier, Leon Benoit, Stan Dromisky, John O'Reilly, Janko Perić, David Pratt, David Price, Elsie Wayne and Bob Wood.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Wolf Koerner and Michel Rossignol, Research Officers; Barry Hamilton, Consultant.

Witnesses: From the Department of National Defence: Lieutenant-General M.K. Jeffery, Chief of the Land Staff; Major General E.S. Fitch, Project Manager, Land Force Reserve Restructure; Brigadier General Herbert Michael Petras, Director General - Land Reserve.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of its study on the state of readiness of the Canadian Forces.

Lieutenant-General M.K. Jeffery made an opening statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

The Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

It was agreed, - That, in relation to its study on Long-Term Care for Veterans, the Sub-Committee on Veterans Affairs be authorized to travel to Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, on April 18, 2002, and to Toronto, on May 1st and 2nd, 2002, with the necessary staff, and that the proposed budget in the amount of $21,460. be adopted for the Sub-Committee’s travel.

It was agreed, - That the Chair be authorized to retain the professional services of Barry Hamilton, as a consultant for the Committee, for the period of April 1, 2002, to May 31, 2002, at a cost of $535. per day, for 20 days, for a total amount of $10,700.

At 5:25 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
