Meeting No. 17

Thursday, May 31, 2001

The Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Vice-Chair, Peter Goldring, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Roy Bailey, Peter Goldring, John O'Reilly, Louis Plamondon, Carmen Provenzano, Geoff Regan, Peter Stoffer, Bryon Wilfert, Bob Wood.

Acting Members present: Ivan Grose for Judi Longfield.

Other Member present: Stéphane Bergeron.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Wolf Koerner and Michel Rossignol, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Department of National Defence: Vadm. G.R. Maddison, Chief of the Maritime Staff; Cmdre J. J. Gauvin, Director General, Maritime Personnel and Readiness; R. Lupien, Command Chief Petty Officer.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108 (2), the Committee resumed consideration of its study on the state of readiness of the Canadian Forces.

Vice-Admiral Gref Maddison made an opening statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 3:46 p.m., John O'Reilly took the Chair.

At 3:52 p.m., Peter Goldring took the Chair.

At 4:57 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
