Meeting No. 69

Thursday, May 30, 2002

The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 9:15 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Clifford Lincoln, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Jim Abbott, Sarmite Bulte, Christiane Gagnon, Wendy Lill, Clifford Lincoln and Chuck Strahl.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Joseph Jackson, Terrence Thomas, research officers.  Consultant:  David Black.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Association of Broadcasters: Glenn O'Farrell, President and Chief Executive Officer; Sylvie Courtemanche, Executive Vice-President, Policy and Regulatory Affairs; Erica Redler, General Counsel and Senior Vice-President, Policy and Legal Affairs; David Goldstein, Vice-President, Government Relations. From the National Association of Broadcasters (U.S.): Ben Ivins, Senior Associate General Counsel. From the Canadian Cable Television Association: Janet Yale, President and Chief Executive Officer; Gerald (Jay) Kerr-Wilson, Senior Counsel. From the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada: Paul Spurgeon, Vice-President, Legal Services and Legal Counsel. From the Canadian Association of Internet Providers: Jay Thomson, President.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Friday, February 22, 2002, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-48, An Act to amend the Copyright Act (See Minutes of Proceedings, Wednesday, May 29, 2002, Meeting No. 68).

The Committee resumed consideration of Clause 1.

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

At 10:00 a.m., Jim Abbott took the Chair.

At 10:20 a.m., Clifford Lincoln resumed the Chair.

At 10:54 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:58 a.m., the sitting resumed.

At 11:58 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
