Meeting No. 63

Thursday, May 9, 2002

The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met in a televised session at 9:15 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Clifford Lincoln, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Jim Abbott, Sarmite Bulte, Claude Duplain, Christiane Gagnon, Wendy Lill, Clifford Lincoln and Tony Tirabassi.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Alan Cofman, intern; Joseph Jackson, Sam Banks and Terrence Thomas, Research Officers.  Consultant:  David Black.

Witnesses: From the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA): Thor Bishopric, President; Garry Neil, Policy Advisor; R.H. Thomson, Actor, writer and broadcaster. From the Alliance for Canadian Advertising Tax Credits: Thor Bishopric, Member; Rupert T. Brendon, President, Institute of Communications and Advertising; Robert Reaume, Vice-President; Garry Neil, Policy Advisor. From ProMedia International Inc.: Hamlin Grange, President; Cynthia Reyes, Vice-President. From the Canadian Film and Television Production Association: Elizabeth McDonald, President and Chief Executive Officer; Ira Levy, Board member; Julia Keatley, Executive Producer, Keatley Films; Stephen Ellis, Chairman of the Board. From the Canadian Independent Film Caucus: Barri Cohen, National Chair; Andrea Nemtin, Executive Board Member; Sandy Crawley, Executive Director.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on the State of the Canadian Broadcasting System.  (See Minutes of Proceeding, dated Thursday, November 8, 2001, Meeting No. 26).

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

At 1:20 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
