Meeting No. 43

Thursday, March 14, 2002

The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met in a televised session at 9:10 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Clifford Lincoln, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Jim Abbott, Christiane Gagnon, Roger Gallaway, Betty Hinton, Wendy Lill, Clifford Lincoln, Grant McNally, Dennis Mills and Tony Tirabassi.

Acting Members present: John Richardson for Paul Bonwick, Bryon Wilfert for Sarmite Bulte, Mauril Bélanger for Rodger Cuzner, Shaun Murphy and Guy St-Julien for Claude Duplain, Carolyn Bennett for John Harvard,

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Terrence Thomas, Research Officer; Alan Cofman, intern; Consultant: David Black.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation: Carole Taylor, Chair, Board of Directors; Robert Rabinovitch, President and CEO; Michel Tremblay, Vice-President, Strategy and Business Development.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on the State of the Canadian Broadcasting System.  (See Minutes of Proceeding, dated Thursday, November 8, 2001, Meeting No. 26).

On motion of Roger Gallaway, it was agreed, - That, in relation to its study on the State of the Canadian Broadcasting System, the Committee approve a travel budget in the amount of $ 132,680.00 to travel to St. John’s, Halifax, Charlottetown, Moncton and Montreal from April 21 – 26, 2002 to hold public hearings and to make site visits, and that the Chair present the said budget to the Budget Sub-Committee of the Liaison Committee.

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

At 12:05 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
