Meeting No. 32

Tuesday, December 4, 2001

The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 8:43 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Vice-Chair, Dennis Mills, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Jim Abbott, , Sarmite Bulte, Christiane Gagnon, John Harvard, Betty Hinton, Wendy Lill, Clifford Lincoln, Grant McNally, Dennis Mills and Tony Tirabassi.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Joseph Jackson, Terrence Thomas, Research Officers; David Black, Consultant.

Witnesses: From the REAL Women of Canada: Gwendolyn Landolt, National Vice-President; Diane Watts, Researcher. From the MediaWatch: Melanie Cishecki, Executive Director. From the Canadian Association of the Deaf: James Roots, Executive Director. From the Canadian Association of Black Journalists: Sam Donkoh, Vice-President. From the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council: Ronald Cohen, National Chair; Ann Mainville Neeson, Executive Director. From the Department of Finance Canada: Len L. Farber, Director General, Legislation, Tax Policy Branch; Ed Short, Senior Tax Policy Officer, Tax Policy Branch.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on the State of the Canadian Broadcasting System.  (See Minutes of Proceeding, dated Thursday, November 8, 2001, Meeting No. 26).

Gwendolyn Landolt made a statement.

At 8:51 a.m., Clifford Lincoln took the Chair.

Melanie Cishecki made a statement.

Sam Donkoh made a statement.

James Roots made a statement.

Ron Cohen made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 11:10 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 11:14 a.m., the sitting resumed.

Len Farber, from the Department of Finance made a statement and, with Ed Short, answered questions.

At 11:30 a.m., Dennis Mills took the Chair.

At 12:08 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
