Tuesday, April 3, 2001

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met in a televised session at 3:43 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Wayne Easter, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, John Cummins, John Duncan, Wayne Easter, Georges Farrah, Gerald Keddy, Dominic LeBlanc, James Lunney, Bill Matthews, Jean-Yves Roy, Guy St-Julien, Paul Steckle, Peter Stoffer, Suzanne Tremblay, Tom Wappel.

Acting Member present: Greg Thompson for Gerald Keddy

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Alan Nixon, Research Officer.

Appearing: From the Department of Fisheries and Oceans: The Hon. Herb Dhaliwal, Minister.

Witnesses: From the Department of Fisheries and Oceans: Jack Stagg, Associate Deputy Minister, Patrick Chamut, Assistant Deputy Minister, Fisheries Management.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced a briefing on the implications of the September 17th, 1999 Supreme Court decision on R. v. Marshall on the Management of Fisheries in the Atlantic Region.

The Chair made opening remarks.

The Hon. Herb Dhaliwal made an opening statement and, with the witnesses, answered questions.

At 5:40 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
