Meeting No. 42

Monday, March 11, 2002

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met in camera at 7:45 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Wayne Easter, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, Andy Burton, John Cummins, Rodger Cuzner, Wayne Easter, Georges Farrah, Loyola Hearn, James Lunney, Bill Matthews, Jean-Yves Roy, Peter Stoffer, Tom Wappel.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Alan Nixon, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Colleen Swords, Deputy Legal Adviser and Director General, Legal Affairs Bureau; David Ehinger, Deputy Director, Oceans Law Section, Oceans, Environmental and Economic Law Division; Allison J. Saunders, Oceans Law Section.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), a study of the implications of extending Canada's Exclusive Economic Zone to include the Nose and Tail of the Grand Banks and the Flemish Cap.

The Committee proceeded to consider a draft letter on Pacific hake to the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans.

It was agreed, - That the said letter be forwarded to the Minister as drafted.

At 8:20 p.m. the Committee resumed its study of the implications of extending Canada's Exclusive Economic Zone to include the Nose and Tail of the Grand Banks and the Flemish Cap.

Colleen Swords made a presentation and answered questions.

At 9:10 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
