Thursday, May 31, 2001

The Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development met in a televised session at 9:10 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Charles L. Caccia, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Bernard Bigras, Charles L. Caccia, Aileen Carroll, Joe Comartin, Paul Forseth, John Herron, Gar Knutson, Karen Kraft Sloan, Bob Mills, Karen Redman, Julian Reed, Hélène Scherrer.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Kristen Douglas, Monique Hébert and Tim Williams, Research Officers

Witnesses: From the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers: Andy Teal, Environment Manager, Imperial Oil Resources; Nick Schultz, Vice-President, Regulatory and Transportation Policy and General Counsel. From the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association: Bonnie Stowkowy, Vice-President, Environment and Regulatory Policy. From the TransCanada PipeLines: Elizabeth Swanson, Senior Counsel, Health, Safety & Environmental Operations & Engineering Law. From the Fraser Institute: Laura Jones. From the Canadian Council of Snowmobile Organizations: Robert Walsh, President. From the International Snowmobile Manufacturers Association: Edward J. Klim, President.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Tuesday, March 20, 2001, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-5, An Act respecting the protection of wildlife species at risk in Canada (See Minutes of Proceedings, Thursday, March 22, 2001, Meeting No. 6).

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

At 11:10 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
