MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 61

Thursday, May 2, 2002

The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 9:12 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Joe Fontana, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Diane Ablonczy, Madeleine Dalphond-Guiral, Joe Fontana, Steve Mahoney, Inky Mark, Anita Neville, Jerry Pickard, David Price, Lynne Yelich.

Acting Members present:  Paul Forseth for Art Hanger, Gérard Binet for Yvon Charbonneau, John Finlay for Tony Valeri.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Benjamin Dolin; Margaret Young, Researchers.

Pursuant to its mandate under Standing Order 108(2) and its order of February 4, 2002, the Committee resumed its study on "Competing for Immigrants".

Pursuant to Standing Order 106(2) – the Committee proceeded to the election of Vice-Chairs.

On motion of Paul Forseth it was agreed, - That Jerry Pickard be elected Vice-Chair of the Committee.

On motion of Paul Forseth it was agreed, - That Diane Ablonczy be elected Vice-Chair of the Committee, in abstentia.

At 9:22 a.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

The Committee began a briefing session on its study on “Competing for Immigrants”.

At 10:50 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
