Meeting No. 56

Wednesday, March 13, 2002

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 1:45 p.m. this day, in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, the Chair, Charles Hubbard, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: David L. Anderson, Rick Borotsik, Claude Duplain, Howard Hilstrom, Charles Hubbard, Larry McCormick and Paul Steckle.

Acting Member present: Odina Desrochers for Suzanne Tremblay.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Jean-Denis Fréchette, Research Officer.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the committee resumed consideration of its study on the Future Role of the Government in Agriculture.

At 1:50 p.m., Claude Duplain took the Chair.

Witnesses: Panel I:  From the "Union des producteurs agricoles du Québec": Yvon Proulx, Chief Economist, Research and Agriculture Policy, District of Longueuil; Laurent Pellerin, President. From the "Union des producteurs agricoles de Saint-Hyacinthe": René Walaszczyk. From the "Coopérative fédérée de Québec": Denis Richard; Claude Lafleur, Secretary General.

Yvon Proulx, René Walaszczyk , Denis Richard made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 3:10 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 3:25 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Panel II:  From the "Fédération d'agriculture biologique du Québec": Pierre Gaudet. From the University of Montreal: Raymond Roy, Dean, Faculty of veterinary medicine. From the McGill University: Dr. Marc G. Fortin, Associate Professor and Chair, Department of Plant Science. From the "Fédération des producteurs d'agneaux et de moutons du Québec": Jean-François Samray, General Manager.

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

At 4:45 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
