Meeting No. 5

Tuesday, March 20, 2001

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 9:10 a.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Charles Hubbard, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: David L. Anderson, Rick Borotsik, Murray Calder, Claude Duplain, Marcel Gagnon, Howard Hilstrom, Charles Hubbard, Larry McCormick, Dick Proctor, Bob Speller, Paul Steckle, Suzanne Tremblay, Rose-Marie Ur.

Acting Member present: Rick Casson for Howard Hilstrom.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge and Jean-Denis Fréchette, research officers.

Witnesses: From the Office of the Auditor General of Canada: L. Denis Desautels, Auditor General of Canada; Sheila Fraser, Deputy Auditor General, Audit Operations; Douglas Timmins, Assistant Auditor General; Neil Maxwell, Principal, Audit Operations Branch. From the Canadian Food Inspection Agency: Ron Doering, President; André Gravel, Executive Vice-President; Peter Brackenridge, Vice-President, Programs; Bart Bilmer, Director, Office of Biotechnology.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108 (2), Consideration of Chapter 25 (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) of the Auditor General's December Report as well as the topic of Biotechnology.

Denis Desautels made an opening statement and, with Neil Maxwell, answered questions.

At 10:30 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:30 a.m., the sitting resumed.

Ron Doering made an opening statement and, with the other witnesses from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, answered questions.

At 11:57 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
