Meeting No. 28

Thursday, October 4, 2001

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 9:05 a.m. this day, in Room 536, Wellington Building, the Chair, Charles Hubbard, presiding.

Member(s) of the Committee present: David L. Anderson, Rick Borotsik, Murray Calder, Mark Eyking, Marcel Gagnon, Howard Hilstrom, Charles Hubbard, Larry McCormick.

Acting Member(s) present: John Finlay for Bob Speller and Carol Skelton for Gary Breitkreuz.

Other Member(s) present: Rob Merrrifield.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge and Jean-Denis Fréchette, Research Officers.

Witness(es): From the Canadian Cervid Council: Dennis Schmidt, Secretary-Treasurer and Delegate of the Ontario Elk Breeders Association; Serge Buy, Executive Director.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), Briefing Session with the Canadian Cervid Council.

Dennis Schmidt and Serge Buy made opening statements and answered questions.

At 10:06 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:10 a.m., the sitting resumed in camera to consider its future business.

It was agreed, - That the Committee hold a joint meeting with the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade on Tuesday, October 16, 2001 at 3:30 p.m.to mark World Food Day.

It was agreed, -- That members of the Board of Directors from the Canadian Wheat Board and/or CEO be invited to appear to provide the Committee an opportunity to discuss its recent position on banning genetically modified wheat and how future developments in biotechnology could affect its role in grain marketing.

It was agreed, -- That Pierre Pettigrew, Minister of International Trade, be invited as soon as possible to provide the Committee an update on measures the federal government has taken since the September 11th terrorist attack to ensure that the movement of agriculture products across the border is not being disrupted.

It was agreed, -- That, Bob Speller, M.P. and Chair of the Task Force on Future Opportunities in Farming, be invited to appear to give the Committee an update or interim report on their findings thus far.  If Mr. Speller is unavailable, another member of the Task Force could appear in his place.

It was agreed, -- That the Canadian Food Inspection Agency be invited to appear at the earliest opportunity in order to inform the Canadians about the safety issues in light of the events of September 11th, 2001.

At 11:00 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
