Meeting No. 24

Tuesday, May 16, 2000

The Standing Committee on Public Accounts met at 3:40 p.m. this day, in Room 705, La Promenade Building, the Chair, John Williams, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: John Finlay, Marlene Jennings, Steve Mahoney, Beth Phinney, John Richardson, Benoît Sauvageau and John Williams.

Acting Member present: Leon Benoit for Philip Mayfield.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Brian O'Neal, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Office of the Auditor General of Canada: L. Denis Desautels, Auditor General of Canada; Richard Flageole, Assistant Auditor General; Serge Gaudet, Principal, Audit Operations Branch. From the Citizenship and Immigration Canada: Janice Cochrane, Deputy Minister; Joan Atkinson, Acting Deputy Minister, Policy and Program Development; Georges Tsai, Assistant Deputy Minister, Corporate Services.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(e), the Committee proceeded to the consideration of Chapter 3 (Citizenship and Immigration Canada --The Economic Component of the Canadian Immigration Program) of the April 2000 Report of the Auditor General of Canada.

L. Denis Desautels and Janice Cochrane made opening statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 4:11 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:47 p.m., the sitting resumed.

The witnesses answered questions.

At 5:23 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
