MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 43

Wednesday, October 4, 2000

The Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs met at 3:32 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, for the purpose of electing a Chair pursuant to Standing Order 106 (1) and 106 (2).

Members of the Committee present: Roy Bailey, Hec Clouthier, Gordon Earle, Peter Goldring, Art Hanger, René Laurin, Judi Longfield, Paul Mercier, Janko Peric, David Pratt, David Price, George Proud, Carmen Provenzano, Tom Wappel and Elsie Wayne.

Acting Members present: Eugène Bellemare for Bob Wood.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Wolf Koerner, Research Officer.

The Clerk of the Committee presided over the election of a Chair.

Hec Clouthier, seconded by David Price moved, - That George Proud do take the chair of this Committee as Chair.

Peter Goldring moved, - That Art Hanger do take the chair of this Committee as Chair.

The question being put on the motion of Hec Clouthier, it was agreed to.

Accordingly, George Proud was declared duly elected Chair of the Committee.

On motion of Tom Wappel, seconded by Janko Peric, it was agreed, - That David Price be elected Vice-Chair of the Committee.

On motion of Peter Goldring, seconded by Roy Bailey, it was agreed, - That Art Hanger be elected Vice-Chair of this Committee in absentia.

It was agreed, - That the Committee proceed to Clause by Clause consideration of Bill C-41, An Act to amend the statute law in relation to veterans' benefits on Thursday, October 5, 2000 at 9:30, a.m. with the Honourable George Baker, Minister of Veterans Affairs in attendance and,

- That the Committee table its report to the House the same day.

At 3:55 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
