Meeting No. 24

Thursday, March 23, 2000

The Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs and the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met jointly in a televised session at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chairs, Pat O'Brien and Bill Graham, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Hec Clouthier, Gordon Earle, Art Hanger, René Laurin, Judi Longfield, Pat O'Brien and Bob Wood.

Acting Member present: Jacques Saada for David Pratt.

Members of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade present: Jean Augustine, Colleen Beaumier, Maud Debien, Bill Graham, Francine Lalonde, Keith Martin, Denis Paradis and Bob Speller.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Corinne McDonald and James Lee, Research Officers. From the Committees and Associations Directorate: Janice Hilchie, Committee Clerk.

Appearing: From the Department of National Defence: Hon. Art Eggleton, Minister of National Defence; From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Hon. Lloyd Axworthy, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Witnesses: From the Department of National Defence: Dr. Kenneth J. Calder, Assistant Deputy Minister (Policy); BGen D.M. Jurkowski, Director General, Military Plans and Operations, Military Plans and Operations. From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Paul Meyer, Director General, International Security Bureau.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committees commenced their examination of NORAD Renewal.

Hon. Lloyd Axworthy and Hon. Art Eggleton each made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 4:30 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
