Meeting No. 19

Tuesday, February 29, 2000

The Standing Committee on National Defence and Veterans Affairs met at 9:02 a.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, Pat O'Brien, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Robert Bertrand, Gordon Earle, Peter Goldring, Art Hanger, René Laurin, Pat O'Brien, Janko Peric, David Pratt, George Proud, Elsie Wayne and Bob Wood.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Wolf Koerner and Corinne McDonald, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Project Ploughshares: Dr. John Steinbruner, Director, Center for International and Security Studies, University of Maryland; Dr. Pavel Podvig, Research Associate, Center for Arms Control, Energy and Environmental Studies, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology; Bill Robinson, Program Associate; Ernie Regehr, Director of Policy and Public Affairs.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of its study of the Revolution in Military Affairs - National Missile Defence.

Ernie Regehr, John Steinbruner and Pavel Podvig, made opening statements and, with the other witness, answered questions.

At 11:00 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
