MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 6

Tuesday, December 7, 1999

The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 11:06 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Clifford Lincoln, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Mauril Bélanger, Paul Bonwick, Sarmite Bulte, Pierre de Savoye, Wendy Lill, Clifford Lincoln, Mark Muise, Alex Shepherd and Bryon Wilfert.

Acting Member present: Ray Bonin for Rick Limoges

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Joseph Jackson, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Department of Canadian Heritage: Don Stephenson, Director General, Cultural Industries; Allan Clarke, Director, Publishing Policy and Programs; Carla Curran, Chief, Book Publishing Policy. From the Canadian Booksellers Association: Sheryl McKean, Executive Director; Jean Barton, Books On Beechwood; Marie Jane Maffini, Prime Crime.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced consideration of the Canadian Book Publishing Industry.

Don Stephenson made a statement and, with Allan Clarke and Carla Curran, answered questions.

At 12:20 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:40 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Sheryl McKean made a statement and, with Jean Barton and Marie Jane Maffini, answered questions.

It was agreed, -- That the Committee retain the services of two consultants to provide technical expertise on its Study on the Canadian Book Publishing Industry, for an amount not to exceed $9000.00.

At 1:27 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
