Thursday, June 8, 2000

The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met at 9:10 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Clifford Lincoln, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Mauril Bélanger, Paul Bonwick, Sarmite Bulte, Pierre de Savoye, Wendy Lill, Rick Limoges, Clifford Lincoln, Inky Mark, Dennis Mills, Alex Shepherd.

Acting Member present: Sarkis Assadourian for Irwin Cotler.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Joseph Jackson and Grant Purves, Researchers.

Participants: From the Ukrainian Canadian Congress: Eugene Czolij, President; Prof. Roman Serbyn, Chair, Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Sub-Committee on Genocide Museum. From the Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Association: Marsha Skrypuch. From the Canadian Arab Federation: John Asfour, President. From the Council of the Muslim Community of Canada: Ahmed Motiar, Associate. From the Rwandese Canadian Association of Greater Toronto: Richard Batsinduka, Representative. From the Armenian National Federation of Canada: Aris Babikian, President. From the Association on Learning and Preserving the History of World War II in Asia (ALPHA): Thekla Lit, Co-Chair ALPHA Canada.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference of the House of November 30, 1999, study of the subject-matter of Bill C-224, an Act to establish the beginning of the twenty-first exhibit in the Canadian Museum of Civilization to recognise crimes against humanity as defined by the United Nation that have been perpetrated during the twentieth century.

Eugene Czolij, Marsha Skrypuch, John Asfour, Ahmed Motiar, Richard Batsinduka, Aris Babikian and Thekla Lit made opening statements and, with Roman Serbyn, answered questions.

At 10:55 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
