Monday, October 16, 2000

The Standing Committee on Finance met at 5:10 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Maurizio Bevilacqua, presiding.

Member of the Committee present: Maurizio Bevilacqua, Roy Cullen, Ken Epp, Richard Harris and Pauline Picard.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Blayne Haggart, Researcher; Marion Wrobel, Senior Analyst.

Witnesses: From the Islamic Financial Institutions, Canada (Committee): Said Zafar, Chairman; Saleem Ansari, Member. From the Canada's Association for the Fifty-Plus: Rolf Calhoun, Ottawa Representative. As Individual: John A. Turley-Ewart, Canadian Banking Historian. From the Canadian Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors: David Thibaudeau, President and Chief Executive Officer.

The Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-38, An Act to establish the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada and to amend certain Acts in relation to financial institutions (See Minutes of Proceedings, Thursday, September 28, 2000, Meeting No. 81).

On Clause 1.

Said Zafar, Rolf Calhoun, John Turley-Ewart and David Thibaudeau made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 6:16 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
