Wednesday, May 17, 2000

The Standing Committee on Finance met at 3:39 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Maurizio Bevilacqua, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Maurizio Bevilacqua, Roy Cullen, Roger Gallaway, Lorne Nystrom and Karen Redman.

Associate Member present: Paul Forseth.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Jean Soucy and Blayne Haggart, Researchers.

Witnesses: From Vanier Institute of the Family: Bob Glossop, Executive Director of Programs. From Infometrica: Michael McCracken, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. From the University of Ottawa: Mario Seccarreccia, Professor, Department of Economics. From Statistics Canada: Stewart Wells, Assistant Chief Statistician, National Accounts and Analytical Studies; Patrick O'Hagan, Assistant director, Balance of Payments Division. As Individuals: Warren Mosler, Director, Economic Analysis, III Finance; Armine Yalnizyan, Economist, Centre for Social Justice.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced consideration of Household Debt.

Bob Glossop, Michael McCracken, Mario Seccarreccia, Stewart Wells, Patrick O’Hagan, Warren Mosler and Armine Yalnizyan made statements and answered questions.

At 5:45 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
