Meeting No. 5

Thursday, November 4, 1999

The Standing Committee on Finance met in a televised session at 3:38 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Maurizio Bevilacqua, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Carolyn Bennett, Maurizio Bevilacqua, Scott Brison, Roy Cullen, Ken Epp, Roger Gallaway, Sophia Leung, Yvan Loubier, Gary Pillitteri and Paul Szabo.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Odette Madore; Jean Soucy, Researchers and Marion Wrobel, Senior Analyst.

Witnesses : From the Canadian Association of University Teachers: David Robinson, Director of Public Policy. From the Canadian Co-operative Association: Bill Turner, President; Lynne Toupin, Chief Executive Director. From the Assembly of First Nations: Chief Phil Fontaine, National Chief; Chief Clarence (Manny) Jules, Kamloops First Nation; Jack London, Legal Counsel. From the Canadian Museums Association : John G. McAvity, Executive Director; Richard Darroch, Public Policy Officer. From the Canadian Library Association: Leacy O'Brien, Associate Executive Director; Vicki Whitmell, Executive Director. From the Heritage Canada Foundation: Brian Anthony, Executive Director.

In accordance with its mandate under Standing Order 83.1, the Committee resumed its Pre-Budget Consultations. (See Minutes of Proceedings, Tuesday, November 2, 1999, Meeting No. 2).

Bill Graham, James Turk, Bill Turner, Lynne Toupin, Chief Fontaine made statements and, with the other participants in the roundtable, answered questions.

At 5:28 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 6:00 p.m., the sitting resumed.

John McAvity, Treacy O’Leary and Brian Anthony made statements and, with the other participants in the roundtable, answered questions.

At 7:23 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
