MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 7

Tuesday, November 23, 1999

The Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development met at 9:20 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Charles Caccia, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Charles Caccia, Marlene Catterall, Rahim Jaffer, Peter Mancini, David Pratt, Julian Reed, Paddy Torsney.

Associate Member present: Aileen Carroll.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Monique Hébert and Christine Labelle Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Water and Wastewater Association: T. Duncan Ellison, Executive Director; André Proulx, Director; Ian Douglas, Chair, CWWA - Water Committee. From Health Canada: Barry Thomas, Senior Scientific Advisor, Bureau of Chemical Hazards; Véronique Morisset, Evaluator, Water Quality, Microbiology and Cosmetics Division. From the Canadian Labour Congress: Hassan Yussuff, Executive Vice-President; Dave Bennett, National Director, Health, Safety and Environment.

The Chairman gave notice of his intention to move, at the next sitting of the Committee, a motion regarding the number of Committee Members including opposition Members required to be present to hold meetings in order to receive evidence.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108 (2), the Committee resumed its study on the management and use of pesticides in Canada including an evaluation of the performance of the Pest Management Regulatory Agency in preventing pollution and in protecting the environment and human health (See Minutes of Proceedings, Tuesday, October 26,1999 (Meeting no. 1))

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

At 11:37 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
