MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 31

Wednesday, March 29, 2000

The Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development met in camera at 3:43 p.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Charles L. Caccia, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Charles L. Caccia, Nick Discepola, Jocelyne Girard-Bujold, Gurmant Grewal, Dennis Gruending, John Herron, Joe Jordan, Karen Kraft Sloan, David Pratt, Julian Reed, Paddy Torsney.

Acting Member present: Judy Sgro for Marlene Catterall.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Monique Hébert, Christine Labelle and Linda Webster, Research Officers.

The Committee considered its future business.

It was agreed -That a Committee budget for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2001, be adopted.

It was agreed -That the contract with Verena J. Ossent, adopted on February 8, 2000, be renewed to cover the period April 3 to May 12, 2000.

It was agreed -That the contract with Arrow Ecologic, adopted on February 8, 2000, be renewed to cover the period April 3 to May 12, 2000.

It was agreed -That the Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2001, having been referred to several committees, pursuant to the Order of February 29, 2000,

i) the Committee, prior to May 19, 2000, hold meetings to consider the Main Estimates of the Department of the Environment, pursuant to Standing Order 81(4),

ii) the Committee invite the Minister of the Environment to appear,

iii) the Committee report to the House no later than May 31, 2000, pursuant to Standing Order 81(4) and

iv) the Committee consider future year expenditure plans of the Department the Environment, pursuant to Standing Order 81(7) and that no later than June 23, 2000, the Committee report to the House, pursuant to Standing Order 81(8).

Pursuant to Standing Order 108 (2), the Committee resumed its study on the management and use of pesticides in Canada including an evaluation of the performance of the Pest Management Regulatory Agency in preventing pollution and in protecting the environment and human health (See Minutes of Proceedings, Tuesday, October 26,1999 (Meeting no. 1)).

The Committee resumed consideration of a draft report.

At 5:27 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
