Meeting No. 24

Wednesday, May 3, 2000

The Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Joe Fontana, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Jean Augustine, Leon Benoit, Bernard Bigras, John Bryden, Joe Fontana, Rick Limoges, John McKay, David Price and Andrew Telegdi.

Acting Members present: John Williams for Rob Anders and Gerry Ritz for Grant McNally.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Margaret Young, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Immigration and Refugee Board: Peter Showler, Chairperson; Glen Bailey, Director General, Policy, Planning and Research; Philip Palmer, General Counsel.

The Order of Reference from the House of Commons dated Tuesday, February 29, 2000 in relation to the Main Estimates for the Fiscal year ending March 31, 2001, being read as follows:

That Votes 1, 5, 10 and 15, under Citizenship and Immigration be referred to the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration.

The Chair called Vote 15 under Citizenship and Immigration and pursuant to Standing Order 81(4), proceeded to consider the Report on Plans and Priorities relating to the Immigration and Refugee Board.

Peter Showler made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 4:45 p.m., the Committee adjourned until 9:00 a.m. Thursday, May 4, 2000.
