Meeting No. 8

Monday, December 6, 1999

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 9:00 a.m., this day, in the Banquet Hall of the Southport Aerospace Centre, in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, the Chair, John Harvard, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Rick Borotsik, Murray Calder, John Harvard, Larry McCormick, Joe McGuire, Ian Murray, Dick Proctor.

Acting Member present: Inky Mark for Garry Breitkreuz.

Other Member present: Jake Hoeppner.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch - Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Researcher; Jean-Denis Fréchette, Economist.

Witnesses: As Individual: Susan Van De Velde; Rey Toews; Fred Tait; Henry Rempel; Henry Reske; Ian Wishart; Ross Tufford; Duncan Broadfoot. From the Canada West Equipment Dealers Association: Clark Tweed, President; Graham Starmer, Executive Director, Manitoba Chamber of Commerce. From the Rural Disaster Recovery Coalition: Donald R. Dewar, President; Ray Redfern; Wayne Motheral.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study of the effectiveness of long-term safety nets and other national initiatives to provide the stability and environment necessary for stable growth in the agricultural industry.

Susan Van Velde, Fred Tait, Rey Toews and Henry Rempel made opening statements and answered questions.

Duncan Broadfoot, Henry Reske, Ross Tufford and Ian Wishart made opening statements and answered questions.

Clark Tweed, Donald Dewar, Ray Redfern, Wayne Motheral made opening statements and, with other witnesses, answered questions.
