Meeting No. 33

Thursday, May 18, 2000

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 9:05 a.m., this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, John Harvard, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Hélène Alarie, Murray Calder, John Harvard, Howard Hilstrom, Larry McCormick, Joe McGuire, Dick Proctor, Gerry Ritz, Paul Steckle.

Other Members present: Rick Casson, Carolyn Bennett.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Researcher; Jean-Denis Fréchette, Economist.

Witnesses: From the Committee on Voluntary Labelling of Foods: Dr. Lee Anne Murphy, Chair; Bill Cunningham, Director, Canadian General Standards Board; Patricia Dolhan, Team Leader, Standards, Canadian General Standards Board. From the Department of Health: Dr. Marc Le Maguer, Director General, Food Directorate; Karen McIntyre, Acting Associate Director, Bureau of Food Policy and Integration; Dr. William Yan, Acting Head, Office of Food Biotechnology.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), and its Order of Reference dated December 15, 1999, (See Minutes of proceedings No. 17 ) the Committee commenced its study of mandatory labeling of genetically modified organisms (GMO).

Dr. Lee Anne Murphy and Dr. Marc Le Maguer made opening statements and, with other witnesses, answered questions.

At 10:59 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
