MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 35

Tuesday, October 20, 1998

The Standing Committee on Transport met at 3:40 p.m. this day, in Room 536, Wellington Building, the Chair, Ray Bonin, presiding.

Member(s) of the Committee present: Rob Anders, Roy Bailey, Ray Bonin, Murray Calder, John Cannis, Bill Casey, Roy Cullen, Bev Desjarlais, Stan Dromisky, Claude Drouin, Michel Guimond, Ovid Jackson, Karen Kraft Sloan, Paul Mercier, Lou Sekora.

Acting Member(s) present: Rick Laliberté for Bev Desjarlais.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: John Christopher.

Moved by Roy Cullen,--That the Standing Committee on Transport invite, separately, Air Canada, Canadian Airlines International and Officials from the federal Department of Transport for an in camera meeting to review Canada's international air transportation policy.

By unanimous consent, Roy Cullen withdrew his motion.

Roy Bailey moved,--That the Committee agrees, when a private Member's Bill is referred, to put the Bill on its agenda at the earliest possible time in order to invite the Member to explain the Bill to the Committee and to decide on its work plan.

The question being put on the motion, it was agreed to.

Roy Bailey moved,--That, pursuant to Standing Order 111(4), whenever an Order in Council for appointment or a certificate of nomination for appointment is referred to the Committee, the Clerk shall obtain and circulate to each member of the Committee a copy of the resume of each appointee.

After debate, the question being put on the motion, it was, by show of hand, negatived.

By unanimous consent, members took five minutes to present their respective requests for subjects to be considered on future business of the Committee. It was agreed to prioritize the list at a subsequent meeting.

At 4:40 p.m., by unanimous consent, the sitting was suspended.

At 4:45 p.m., by unanimous consent, the sitting resumed in camera.

It was agreed,--That the Minister of Transport appears before the Committee the next day, Wednesday, October 21, 1998, at 3:30 p.m. to follow-up on the Committee's Fourth Report: "The Renaissance of Passenger Rail in Canada".

At 4:49 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
