MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 21

Tuesday, April 28, 1998

The Standing Committee on Transport met in camera met at 3:35 o’clock p.m., this day, in Room 208, West Block, the Chair, Raymond Bonin, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Roy Bailey, Murray Calder, Bill Casey, Roy Cullen, Bev Desjarlais, Claude Drouin, Joe Fontana, Michel Guimond, Stan Keyes, Inky Mark, Paul Mercier and Lee Morrison..

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: John Christopher and Dan Shaw, Research Officers.

The Committee proceeded to consider its future business.

It was agreed,--That the Committee table its report on Passenger Rail Service to the House before summer adjournment.

It was agreed,--That the Committee meet with Canadian National on May 6, and with Canadian Pacific on May 7, 1998.

It was agreed,--That Public Consultations on Passenger Rail Service be held after the Committee has tabled its Report to the House.

It was agreed,--That on May 25 and 26, the Committee meet from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon and 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. and on May 27 at 3:30 p.m. to discuss its draft report, and that the Report be tabled in the House on June 5, 1998.

It was agreed,--That members use their travelling points while travelling out West.

It was agreed,--That the Committee approves the proposed travel budget of $27,000 and that the Chair seek authorization from the House to travel to Western Canada from May 20 to 23, 1998 in relation to its study on the Passenger Rail Service and that the necessary staff accompany the Committee.

It was agreed,--That Air Canada, Canadian Airlines and the Airport Authorities of Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal be invited to appear on the Passenger Rail Service study.

It was agreed,--That the Committee invite the Minister of Transportation to appear before this Committee at the earliest opportunity, but not later than May 14, 1998 to address the Main Estimates for the Fiscal Year of 1998-99 and explain the spending priorities.

At 4:45 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
