The Standing Committee on Public Accounts met at 3:34 o’clock p.m., this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, John Williams, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Sue Barnes, Elinor Caplan, Mac Harb, Gurmant Grewal, Ivan Grose, René Laurin, Steve Mahoney, Lynn Myers, Elsie Wayne and John Williams.
Acting Member present: John Reynolds for Philip W. Mayfield.
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Brian O’Neal and Jean Dupuis, Research Officers.
Witnesses: From the Office of the Auditor General of Canada: L. Denis Desautels, Auditor General of Canada; Richard Flageole, Assistant Auditor General; Serge Gaudet, Principal, Audit Operations Branch. From Citizenship and Immigration Canada: Greg Fyffe, Assistant Deputy Minister, Policy and Program Development; Georges Tsaï, Assistant Deputy Minister, Corporate Services; Brian Grant, Acting Director General, Enforcement Branch; Gerry Van Kessel, Director General, Refugee Branch. Pursuant to Standing Order 108 (3)(e), the Committee resumed consideration of Chapter 25 of the December 1997 Report of the Auditor General of Canada (Citizenship and Immigration Canada and Immigration and Refugee Board -- The Processing of Refugee Claims) (See Minutes of Proceedings dated Wednesday, December 3, 1997, Meeting No. 12).
The witnesses answered questions.
