Tuesday, April 21, 1998

The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-food met at 8:10 a.m., this day, in Room

112-N, Centre Block, Joe McGuire, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Hélène Alarie, Rick Borotsik, Gerry Byrne, John Harvard, Jay Hill, Jake E. Hoeppner, Larry McCormick, Joe McGuire, Dick Proctor, Paul Steckle and Rose-Marie Ur.

Acting Member of the Committee present: Garry Breitkreuz for Leon E. Benoit.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch: Sonya Dakers, Research Coordinator and Frédéric Forge, Researcher.

Witnesses: From the Manitoba Pulse Growers Association Inc.: Don Kuhl, Past President. From the Saskatchewan Farmer Consultations for SCRIP: Bill Copland, Provincial Chair. From the Western Canadian Marketers and Processors Association: Greg Simpson. From the Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association: Keith Lewis, Director, Saskatchewan. From the Alberta Pulse Growers Commission: Thomas Jackson, Commissioner. From the Saskatchewan Canola Growers: Rob R. McGregor, Director. From the Saskatchewan Pulse Growers: Garry Meir, Chair. From the Western Barley Growers' Association: Bill Cooper, Member and Leo Meyer, Vice-President.

The Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-26, An Act to Amend the Canada Grain Act and the Agriculture and Agri-Food Administration Monetary Penalties Act and to Repeal the Grain Futures Act be now read a second time and referred to the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food (See Minutes of Proceedings of Thursday, April 2, 1998, Meeting No. 31).

Don Kuhl, Bill Copland, Greg Simpson and Keith Lewis made opening statements and answered questions.

At 9:30 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 9:39 a.m, the sitting resumed.

Thomas Jackson, Rob R. McGregor, Garry Meier and Leo Meyer made opening statements and answered questions.

At 11:03 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
