Thursday, February 12, 1998


The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-food met at 9:11 a.m., this day, in Room 269, West Block, Joe McGuire, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Paul Bonwick, Murray Calder, Jean-Guy Chrétien, Denis Coderre, Jay Hill, Larry McCormick, Joe McGuire, Dick Proctor and Paul Steckle.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch: Sonya Dakers, Research Coordinator.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to review the Programs, Policies and Administration of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, in relation with the Legislative Renewal on Food Safety.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Food Inspection Agency: Peter Brackenridge, Director General, Federal/Provincial Relations and Corporate Planning; Tom Beaver, Chair, Task Force on Legislation and Mark McCombs, Director, Legal Services.

It was agreed, That the motion standing in the name of Jay Hill be considered at the next meeting of the Commitee.

Peter Brackenridge and Tom Beaver made opening statements and answered questions.

At 10:36 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
