The tradition of desks for Members in the Chamber goes back to the first meeting of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada at Kingston in 1841. Again in 1919, the Members of the House of Commons were consulted on this issue and, at a meeting held by the Joint Committee on the Reconstruction of Parliament on September 26, it was reported that Members "desire to have desks in the new House Chamber".
