The Standing Committee on Public Accounts met in a televised session at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, David Christopherson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Jay Aspin, Joyce Bateman, Lysane Blanchette-Lamothe, Hon. Gerry Byrne, Guy Caron, David Christopherson, Earl Dreeshen, Matthew Dubé, Bryan Hayes, Daryl Kramp, Andrew Saxton and Bev Shipley.

 

Other Members present: Linda Duncan.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Alex Smith, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Office of the Auditor General of Canada: John Wiersema, Interim Auditor General; Frank Barrett, Principal; Ronnie Campbell, Assistant Auditor General. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation: Douglas Stewart, Vice-President, Policy and Planning. Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development: Michael Wernick, Deputy Minister. Department of Health: Shelagh Jane Woods, Director General, Primary Health Care and Public Health Directorate, First Nations and Inuit Health Branch.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

Andrew Saxton moved, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 111.1(1), the Committee invite Michael Ferguson, the nominee for the position of Auditor General of Canada, to appear before the Committee on Monday, October 31, 2011.

Debate arose thereon.

 

Guy Caron moved, — That the debate be now adjourned.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was negatived, by a show of hands: YEAS: 2; NAYS: 7.

 

The Committee resumed consideration of the motion of Andrew Saxton.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 9; NAYS: 0.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(g) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, October 17, 2011, the Committee resumed consideration of Chapter 4, Programs for First Nations on Reserves, of the 2011 Status Report of the Auditor General of Canada referred to the Committee on Thursday, June 9, 2011.
 

Michael Wernick, John Wiersema, Douglas Stewart, Ronnie Campbell and Shelagh Jane Woods answered questions.

 

At 4:59 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
