The Standing Committee on the Status of Women met at 11:06 a.m. this day, in Room C-110, 1 Wellington Street, the Chair, the Hon. Hedy Fry, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Sylvie Boucher, Ray Boughen, Dona Cadman, Nicole Demers, Luc Desnoyers, Hon. Hedy Fry, Nina Grewal, Irene Mathyssen, Hon. Anita Neville, Tilly O'Neill-Gordon and Michelle Simson.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Julie Cool, Analyst; Laura Munn-Rivard, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies: Kim Pate, Executive Director. Government of Manitoba: Nahanni Fontaine, Special Advisor on Aboriginal Women's Issues, Aboriginal Issues Committee of Cabinet. Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg: Gilbert W. Whiteduck, Chief; Bridget Tolley, Member; Caitlin Tolley, Representative, Youth Representative for Quebec, Assembly of First Nations. Yukon Aboriginal Women's Council: Courtney Wheelton, Representative, Project Coordinator, Yukon Sisters in Spirit.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on Monday, March 8, 2010, the Committee resumed its study of violence against Aboriginal women.
 

Kim Pate, Nahanni Fontaine, Courtney Wheelton, Bridget Tolley and Gilbert W. Whiteduck made statements and, with the other witness, answered questions.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

The Clerk of the Committee presided over the election of the Vice-Chair.

 

On motion of Sylvie Boucher, it was agreed, — That Tilly O'Neill-Gordon be elected First Vice-Chair of the Committee.

 

At 12:49 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:50 p.m., the sitting resumed in camera.

 

At 12:55 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
