The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met in a televised session at 11:14 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Kevin Sorenson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Vivian Barbot, Bill Casey, Hon. Mark Eyking, Peter Goldring, Wajid Khan, Francine Lalonde, Alexa McDonough, Deepak Obhrai, Bernard Patry, Kevin Sorenson and Hon. Bryon Wilfert.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Bill Graham for Hon. Ujjal Dosanjh, Hon. Keith Martin for Hon. Ujjal Dosanjh and Bev Shipley for Deepak Obhrai.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: James Lee, Analyst; Gerald Schmitz, Principal.

 

Witnesses: Center on International Cooperation: Barnett R. Rubin, Director of Studies and Senior Fellow, University of New York. University of Victoria: Gordon Smith, Executive Director, Centre for Global Studies and Adjunct Professor of Political Science.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on February 1, 2007, the Committee proceeded to a briefing on the situation in Afghanistan.
 

The witnesses made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 11:55 a.m., Mr. Patry took the Chair.

 

At 11:58 a.m., Mr. Sorenson took the Chair.

 

At 1:03 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 1:09 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

That the proposed budget from the Subcommittee on International Human Rights in the amount of $ 9 900, for the period of March 21, 2007 to May 31, 2007 be adopted.

 

The Chair presented the First, Second and Third Reports from the Subcommittee on Human Rights and International Development.

 

At 1:20 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
