The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met in camera at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 701, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Kevin Sorenson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Diane Bourgeois, Bill Casey, Peter Goldring, Hon. Keith Martin, Alexa McDonough, Deepak Obhrai, Bernard Patry, Kevin Sorenson, Peter Van Loan and Hon. Bryon Wilfert.

 

Acting Members present: Vivian Barbot for Francine Lalonde and John Maloney for Hon. Albina Guarnieri.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Gerald Schmitz, Principal.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on May 10, 2006, the Committee resumed a study of Canada's role in complex international interventions that involve multiple foreign policy instruments focusing on Canada's efforts in Haiti.
 

The Committee resumed consideration of a draft report.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the Committee meet with Dr. Usman Bugaje, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of Nigeria's House of Representatives (lower chamber), for an informal lunch on November 8, 2006, and that the Clerk make the necessary arrangements for the lunch.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee meet with a delegation of parliamentarians from the European Union November 22, 2006 for a working lunch to discuss issues of mutual interest.

 

It was agreed, — That members would submit the names of two or three witnesses to appear on the situation in Afghanistan, either from the list prepared by the Library of Parliament analysts or their own list, to the Chair’s office as soon as possible.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee meet with a delegation from Pakistan lead by the Honourable Chaudhry Amir Hussain, the Speaker of the National Assembly, November 21, 2006.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee hear witnesses on Bill C-293 for one hour on November 21, 2006 and during the second hour hear witnesses on the democratic development study.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee meet for one hour on Bill C-293 on November 28, 2006.

 

At 5:30 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
