The Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development met in a televised session at 11:02 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C Centre Block, the Chair, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Hon. Sue Barnes, André Bellavance, Bernard Cleary, Jeremy Harrison, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Gary Lunn, Jim Prentice, Carol Skelton, David Smith, Lloyd St. Amand and Roger Valley.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Mary Hurley, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. Sue Barnes, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians.

 

Witnesses: Justice Canada: Michael Delaney, Legal Counsel, Legal Services - INAC. Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development : Gail Mitchell, Director, Policy and Coordination, Comprehensive Claims Branch. Government of Newfoundland and Labrador: Thomas G Rideout, Minister responsible for Aboriginal Affairs, Department of Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs. Province of Newfoundland and Labrador: Wally Andersen, MHA, Torngat Mountains. Government of Newfoundland and Labrador: Ruby Carter, Senior Negotiator, Department of Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs; Aubrey Gover, Legal Counsel, Department of Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs; David Hughes, Director, Policy and Planning, Department of Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs.

 

Participants present: Senate: Hon. Willie Adams, Senator; Hon. William Rompkey.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on June 7, 2005, the Committee resumed its study of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement and the Labrador Inuit Tax Treatment Agreement.
 

The Hon. Sue Barnes made a statement and, with Gail Mitchell, answered questions.

 

By unanimous consent, it was agreed, — That Senator Willie Adams and Senator William Rompkey be allowed to participate in the debate of this Committee meeting.

 

At 11:59 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:06 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Thomas G. Rideout and Wally Andersen made statements and, with Ruby Carter, answered questions.

 

At 1:01 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
