The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development met in camera at 3:33 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Kevin Sorenson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Vivian Barbot, Hon. Raymond Chan, Johanne Deschamps, Paul Dewar, Peter Goldring, Wajid Khan, Denis Lebel, Hon. Keith Martin, Deepak Obhrai, Bernard Patry, Hon. Bob Rae and Kevin Sorenson.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Navdeep Bains for Hon. Raymond Chan.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: James Lee, Analyst; Natalie Mychajlyszyn, Analyst.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on November 20, 2007, the Committee resumed its study of Canada's mission in Afghanistan.
 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

At 5:17 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 5:17 p.m., the sitting resumed in public.

 

The Committee resumed consideration of the motion of Paul Dewar, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development report to the House the following recommendations:

That the Government adopt the recommendations put forward in the Advisory Group Report: National Roundtables on Corporate Social Responsibility and the Canadian Extractive Industry in Developing Countries, and

That the government announce its proposals for the implementation of the Report’s recommendations.

The debate continued.

 

Deepak Obhrai moved, — That the motion be amended by replacing the words “the following recommendations; that the Government adopt the recommendations put forward in ” with the words “that it recommends that the government provide its response in a reasonable time to ” and delete all the words after “Developing Countries”.

Debate arose thereon.

 

The question was put on the amendment of Deepak Obhrai and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 7; NAYS: 1.

 

The question was put on the motion, as amended, and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 5; NAYS: 1.

 

The motion, as amended, read as follows:

That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development report to the House that it recommends that the government provide its response in a reasonable time to the Advisory Group Report: National Roundtables on Corporate Social Responsibility and the Canadian Extractive Industry in Developing Countries.

 

At 5:41 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
