NEWS RELEASE

The Impact of COVID-19 on Seniors

Ottawa, June 30, 2021 -

The House of Commons Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities (the Committee) is undertaking a study of the impact of COVID-19 on seniors. The study was inspired by a motion sponsored by Rosemarie Falk (Member of Parliament for Battlefords—Lloydminster). The motion was adopted by the Committee on 2 February 2021 and prioritized on 6 May 2021.

Over the course of the study, the Committee will explore the financial, social and health impacts of COVID-19 on seniors. The study will review existing and announced programs for seniors, including federal transfers to provinces and territories and Indigenous governments, and make recommendations to improve support for vulnerable seniors.

The Committee previously studied seniors during the 1st session of the 42nd Parliament, tabling its report (Advancing Inclusion and Quality of Life for Seniors) in the House of Commons on Thursday, 29 March 2018.

The Committee invites members of the public to submit written briefs, no longer than 5 pages (approximately 2,000 words) for consideration in the study. For more information on how to prepare a submission, please consult the Guide for Submitting Briefs to House of Commons Committees.

On Tuesday, June 15, 2021, it was agreed that the deadline from the Committee to receive written briefs from the public be extended until the end of oral witness testimony. Briefs may be submitted electronically to the Committee Clerk at HUMA@parl.gc.ca or submitted online through the Committee’s study page of its website.

Canadians are welcome to follow the Committee on its website, where additional information is provided on its meetings, including past testimony; its ongoing work; and its membership.
