Status of Women Committee Invites the Public to Submit Written Briefs for its Study on Barriers Facing Women in Politics

Ottawa, May 7, 2018 -

The House of Commons Standing Committee on the Status of Women (the Committee) invites the public to submit written briefs for the Committee’s study on Barriers Facing Women in Politics.

During this study, the Committee will be examining barriers facing women in politics, including, but not limited to:

  • barriers in the candidate recruitment and selection process, male-dominated professional networks, and mentorship opportunities; and
  • barriers in the House of Commons, such as party discipline, gender-biased media treatment and inequity in professional development and support.

The Committee requests that the submission of written briefs focus on these topics and that the briefs include specific recommendations directed to the Government of Canada on how to increase the representation of women in politics in Canada.

The deadline for the Committee to receive written briefs from the public, in either official language, is Friday, July 6, 2018. Briefs should not exceed two pages in length (approximately 1000 words). Briefs should be sent electronically to the Committee Clerk at FEWO@parl.gc.ca or submitted online through the Committee’s website. Please see the Guide for Submitting Briefs to House of Commons Committees for further information.

The Committee looks forward to hearing from Canadians on this important topic. The Committee will release a final report, with recommendations, that will propose steps that the Government of Canada could take to improve the representation of women in politics in Canada.

The Committee welcomes all Canadians to follow its work on its website, where additional information is provided on its meetings and testimony, its live proceedings, and its membership.
