Pre-budget Consultations 2011 Report

Ottawa, December 14, 2011 -

The House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance tabled a report today on its pre-budget consultations for 2011. Entitled Staying Focussed on Canadian Jobs and Growth, the report contains 53 recommendations in four areas: federal finances, businesses, communities and people.

“I believe that implementation of the Committee’s recommendations, which it is hoped will occur in the 2012 federal budget, will result in a resilient nation and a sustained economic recovery. These two themes were foremost in our minds as we contemplated the suggestions made by the groups and individuals who submitted briefs and appeared before us during our consultations,” said Mr. James Rajotte, chair of the Committee.

Mr. Rajotte continued: “On behalf of the Committee, I wish to thank the 410 groups and individuals who submitted their thoughts about the priorities that should be included in the forthcoming budget. They are an integral part of our pre-budget consultation process. As well, I wish to acknowledge their willingness to have their submissions posted on the Committee’s website. This inaugural undertaking helps all Canadians become informed about the budget priorities of other Canadian residents, businesses and communities.”

The Committee launched the 2011 pre-budget consultations on June 27, 2011, when Canadians were invited to provide their views about how to achieve a sustained economic recovery in Canada, how to create quality sustainable jobs, how to ensure relatively low rates of taxation and how to achieve a balanced budget. The Committee met with groups and individuals in Ottawa, Ontario; Whitehorse, Yukon; Prince Rupert, British Columbia; Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; Windsor, Ontario; Toronto, Ontario; Montreal, Quebec; St. John’s, Newfoundland and Moncton, New Brunswick.
