The Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security met at 3:34 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Garry Breitkreuz, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Garry Breitkreuz, Don Davies, Luc Desnoyers, Shelly Glover, Mark Holland, Andrew Kania, Dave MacKenzie, Phil McColeman, Maria Mourani, Rick Norlock, Brent Rathgeber and Borys Wrzesnewskyj.

 

Associate Members present: Candice Hoeppner.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lyne Casavant, Analyst. House of Commons: Wayne Cole, Legislative Clerk.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 106(4), the Committee commenced consideration of the request by four (4) members of the Committee to address the issue of obtaining two RCMP documents.
 

It was agreed, — That the Royal Canadian Mounted Police be asked to submit to the Committee the two documents referred to by William Sweeney during his appearance before the Committee on Thursday, May 4, 2010, specifically:

1) Canadian Firearms Program Evaluation, February 2010;

2)An internal RCMP audit of the Canadian Firearms program from around the same time.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, March 3, 2010, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-391, An Act to amend the Criminal Code and the Firearms Act (repeal of long-gun registry).
 

Don Davies moved, — That the clause-by-clause consideration of Bill C-391, An Act to amend the Criminal Code and the Firearms Act (repeal of long-gun registry), be on Thursday, June 3, 2010, and on Tuesday, June 8, 2010.

Debate arose thereon.

 

Mark Holland moved, — That the motion be amended by deleting the words “ and Tuesday, June 8, 2010“ and replacing them by the following “and that the Committee continue until finished”.

By unanimous consent, the amendment was withdrawn.

Mark Holland moved, — That this Committee, pursuant to Standing Order 97.1 (1), recommends that the House of Commons do not proceed further with Bill C-391, An Act to amend the Criminal Code and the Firearms Act (repeal of long-gun registry), because the Committee has heard sufficient testimony that the bill will dismantle a tool that promotes and enhances public security and the safety of Canadian police officers.
