The Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security met in a televised session at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Garry Breitkreuz, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Garry Breitkreuz, Luc Desnoyers, Shelly Glover, Mark Holland, Andrew Kania, Phil McColeman, Maria Mourani, Rick Norlock, Brent Rathgeber and Borys Wrzesnewskyj.

 

Acting Members present: Rob Clarke for Phil McColeman, Joe Comartin for Don Davies, Candice Hoeppner for Garry Breitkreuz, Hon. Marlene Jennings for Mark Holland, Daniel Petit for Dave MacKenzie and David Tilson for Shelly Glover.

 

Associate Members present: Candice Hoeppner.

 

Other Members present: Hon. Marlene Jennings.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Lyne Casavant, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters: Greg Farrant, Manager, Government Relations and Communications. As an individual: Murray Grismer, Sergeant. Canadians Against Violence Everywhere Advocating its Termination: Priscilla de Villiers, Victim Advocate and Founder. Institut national de santé publique du Québec: Pierre Maurice, Chief, Scientific Unit, Safety and Injury Prevention; Etienne Blais, Assistant Professor, School of Criminology, University of Montreal. Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police: William Blair, President, Chief of the Toronto Police Service.

 
Pursuant to the Order of Reference of Wednesday, March 3, 2010, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-391, An Act to amend the Criminal Code and the Firearms Act (repeal of long-gun registry).
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

At 4:45 p.m., Phil McColeman took the Chair.

 

Borys Wrzesnewskyj moved, — That the Royal Canadian Mounted Police be asked to submit to the Committee the two documents referred to by William Sweeney during his appearance before the Committee on Thursday, May 4, 2010.

Debate arose thereon.

 

At 5:32 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
